Approximately twenty years after Mercury leaves Survey space, Captain Janis, his nephew Nico, and the rest of the crew are celebrating their approach to the halfway point between the Milky Way and Andromeda. When Mercury suddenly shuts down, leaving the ship stranded, the crew, along with the Elders that have taken residence on the ship, fight to survive in near total darkness. When they miss their regular check-in with Survey, Loki and Nemetona are sent to figure out what happened. What the AIs and their crews find, however, is much more than they, and Mercury's crew, could ever have imagined.
